(CNN) — The FBI is taking the lead in investigating the double bombing that caused death and destruction near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, authorities said.

A range of different agencies are involved in the hunt to find out who carried out the lethal attack and why, but officials are cautioning that very little is known at this point.

“This will be a combined federal, state and local effort,” Richard DesLauriers, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, said at a news briefing by law enforcement officials on Monday evening.

Describing it as a “criminal investigation” that is also “a potential terrorist investigation,” DesLauriers said the FBI was declaring federal jurisdiction over the matter through the Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force.

It wasn’t clear Monday whether the origin of the bombings was domestic or foreign, according to a federal law…

In this day, age and era, we still have leaqders who believe in going to war just for the sake of it.Sounds very stupid.

(CNN) — North Korea is raising the temperature on its neighbors, saying in its latest threat that it would not give any advance warning before any attack on South Korea.

“Our retaliatory action will start without any notice from now,” Pyongyang said in a statement published Tuesday by its official news agency, KCNA.

North Korea said it was responding to what it called insults from the “puppet authorities” in the South, claiming that there had been a rally against North Korea in Seoul — a rally it called a “monstrous criminal act.”

The renewed menacing rhetoric came a day after North Koreans celebrated the birthday of their country’s founder, Kim Il Sung, who launched the Korean War.

Kim Min-seok, a spokesman for the South Korean Defense Ministry, said the latest threat from the North was regrettable.

Amid concern that Pyongyang could carry out a missile test, Kim Min-seok said South…

HUNTSVILLE (AP) – The U.S. Supreme Court is considering appeals from a North Texas man set to die for the carjack-slaying of a 17-year-old a dozen years ago.

Ronnie Threadgill faced lethal injection Tuesday evening in Huntsville for fatally shooting Dexter McDonald near Corsicana, about 60 miles south of Dallas.

An attorney for the 40-year-old Threadgill argued to justices that he had deficient legal help at his trial in 2002 and in earlier appeals of his case. State lawyers contended the appeal was merely an attempt to delay Threadgill’s punishment.

Threadgill already had a long criminal record when he led officers in April 2001 on a chase down Interstate-45 through Navarro County. After wrecking, he ran off on foot and was found at a truck stop, hiding under a semitrailer.

AUSTIN (AP) – A Texas Senate panel is set to discuss a sweeping overhaul of school curriculum and standardized testing already approved by the state House.

The Senate Education Committee on Tuesday gets its first official crack at House Bill 5, an omnibus education proposal approved last month in the lower chamber 145-2.

Designed to create greater flexibility for vocational training, the bill would allow students to earn a “foundation” diploma without taking upper-level math or science courses, including Algebra II.

It also would reduce the number of standardized tests students must pass in order to graduate from 15 to five.

A high-profile curriculum overhaul proposed in the Senate is similar in many ways. It too would no longer require Algebra II for graduation, while mandating that students pass just five standardized tests.
